A cosy family garden built around comfort and intimacy

The client’s brief for this garden was to make a low-maintenance outdoor space the family could truly enjoy. So our design for it focused on how it would be actually used, rather than on a traditional lawn.

At the back, a pergola creates a secluded corner that feels private without being confined, while the deck below it has become one of the garden’s most loved spots – romantic in the evening light, perfect for morning coffee, and just as good for winding down after dark.

The patio adjacent to the house is finished in porcelain tiles and clay pavers for a warm and grounded feel, and features a built-in outdoor kitchen where the family can gather with friends, cook together, and share long summer evenings.

Overall, it’s proof that a family garden doesn't need a lawn to be inviting, convivial, and ideal for everyday use.

A small contemporary garden using complementary shapes 

For this small back garden, we created a feature of staggered stepping-stones which bisect it diagonally and create an illusion of greater width to the space. Buff porcelain paving adjacent to the rear of the house provides a comfortable dining area, while angular, softly-planted beds complement the hard landscaping.

The porcelain steps set in gravel lead to a decked seating area at the rear, with the boards laid at opposing angles to create interest. Around the firepit, a floating bench provides the perfect spot to relax and enjoy the tranquillity of the garden. Meanwhile, the feature lighting nestled in the beds illuminates the planting and gives a beautiful effect during the hours of darkness.
